Dr. Gutierrez specializes in stroke prevention, treatment and care. His interest is focused on the large arteries of the brain and the mechanisms underlying pathological changes in these arteries as a consequence of vascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking. Because individuals with HIV might be at higher risk of stroke and dementia, Dr. Gutierrez's has studied subjects with HIV to evaluate if vascular risk factors interact with HIV, or whether the medications given to treat HIV contribute to the development of brain arterial disease in this population. Understanding how vascular risk factors injure the brain arteries might lead to innovative ways to prevent strokes in the general population and in those with HIV.

Research:

Dr. Gutierrez's main research interest is brain arterial remodeling and its association/risks with cerebrovascular disease, including stroke and vascular dementia. His projects have specifically focused on HIV and the mechanism underlying the arteriopathy sometimes seen in HIV, consisting of arterial dilatation and subsequent strokes. Dr. Gutierrez is the leader of one of the largest postmortem brain large arteries studies from which morphometric and functional characterization has been carried over. Additionally, he has dedicated a fair amount of time to collecting brain arterial diameters in more than 700 stroke-free subjects from the Northern Manhattan Study (NOMAS), to further investigate the associations and consequences of brain arterial remodeling. Dr. Gutierrez’s other areas of interest include disparities in stroke mechanisms and stroke prevention.
