Dr. Przedborski's academic interests include the cause and the treatment of Parkinson's disease. He is currently the principal investigator of a 5-year NIH-funded grant examining the role of superoxide dismutase, a key enzyme in cellular protective mechanisms against free radicals. He serves as an ad hoc Reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, the Canadian Medical Research Council, and various medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. In basic research, Dr. Przedborski's main focus is on the understanding of the molecular mechanism by which neurotoxins cause the death of dopaminergic neurons. Using an original approach, he used genetically modified animals to demonstrate that the toxin MPTP kills cells by the production of free radicals and by interacting with the nitric oxide system. Dr. Przedborski also developed an experimental model mimicking an early stage of Parkinson's disease in order to test neuroprotective interventions. Using this model, he demonstrated that trophic factors can prevent the death of dopaminergic neurons. All of these studies provide major new insight into the cause of Parkinson's disease and open up new therapeutic avenues. Dr. Przedborski's publications have appeared in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (USA), Journal of Neuroscience, Neuroscience, and many other leading scientific journals.
